Carmax Inc is the largest US retailer of used cars, part of the S&P 500. Opened in 1993 as a subsidiary of the Circuit City Stores consumer electronics chain store as a used car retailer. By 1999, the company had acquired several car franchises, including Chrysler Corporation , Mitsubishi Motors, Toyota and Nissan. The business model used by the company revolutionized the retail of used cars, quickly becoming the new standard in this market. The company became public in 1997, in 2002, Carmax separated from Circuit City and became independent Sima company. Currently, shares of Carmax traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol KMX.
